Every book that is introduced to you in Canadian MoneySaver is read by me
for this purpose. Although I have not developed a fixed-rating system, like
a star ranking, I do have my own selection criteria.
There are many books which I disregard for various reasons because they are
not worthy of consideration, in my opinion. I often make positive comments
to indicate my personal recommendations for a title. The publishers have no
influence on my selectionseven self-published titles are give equal time.
There are a
few publishers, such as McGraw Hill, Wiley and Insomniac, who clearly
dominate the personal finance categoryand regularly publish quality titles.
I avoid repeating reviews of annuals, although some are excellent sources.
For example, Brian Quinlan, a contributing editor, co-authors a must-read,
Tax Tips for Canadians for Dummies. (Where do they get these titles?)
Too many Canadian "authors" have discovered that their book can be an
effective business card. Unfortunately, the book's content has little value
as many are "copycat" titles and some times penned by a ghost writer. You
find little new or practical advice.
There always seems to be a current contrarian title available. A U.S. title,
Crash Proof, authored by a Wall Street prognosticator, cites support
for the coming economic collapse in the U.S. The author, Peter Schiff, warns
of the need to avoid the U.S. Dollarand, in fact, recommends that Americans should
invest in Canada for future stock prosperity. I support his strategy but
dislike the constant reminder that his firm could fulfill our investment
needs.
Occasionally, we print excerpts from selected titles for your benefit. These
passages have a strong, and often unique, message for you.
When a publisher is given space in
MoneySaver to "advertise" specific titles
in a display ad (see page two), I select the books that are featured. This
space is not paid for by the publisher.
Once a title is featured in
MoneySaver, it will be displayed at
http://www.canadianmoneysaver.ca/rc_books.aspx. You may view books
written by our contributing editors, plus other recently featured books. We
keep the best titles here for at least 6 months.
I welcome you comments.
